| Final Fantasy 7 is arguably the most popular role-playing game of all time. Way back in 1997 it was released with the new technology that was the Sony Playstation and became one of the most popular and demanded games in history. Final Fantasy games were well-known at the time, they all featured great stories and music but lacked in the visuals department. Final Fantasy 7 moved forward in leaps and bounds by becoming the first Final Fantasy game in full 3D play. This completed the square for Final Fantasy 7 by combining this with a stunning storyline. At the time, most gamers had never experienced 3D gameplay and most were used to blocky 2D games. The first thing that was noted in Final Fantasy 7 was its amazing visuals and FMV sequences. This game took the world by storm, it was revolutionary to games worldwide and these were factors that contributed to its unbelievable worldwide popularity. The only thing that differed from Final Fantasy 7 and other competing RPG games was mainly its presentation (3D gameplay), everything else remaining relativately the same. Adding 3D gameplay to an RPG changed the way the fans expected future games to be like. There is a huge difference between having a 3D battle with more-realistic monsters, magic spells and attacks than settle a plain, flat 2D view from above. Final Fantasy 7 provides great control and movement of the character in any situation whether it be in a battle or the world map, there are some minor glitches in the game but nothing that makes the game un-playable. Final Fantasy 7 was able to involve the player alot more into the story than other games at the time. It had many unexpected twists and turns and even tragic moments that urged you to play on. The starting plot of Final Fantasy 7 was exciting by itself, but by adding love triangles and removing main characters from the storyline in tragic ways added to hype and expectation as you were making your way through the journey. Another good thing about this game is, there are alot more things to do then just beat the game'. There are many sidequests and mini-games in Final Fantasy 7 that can earn you special rewards. Final Fantasy 7's battle system revolves around classic turn-based concept where the "good guys are one side and the bad guys are on the other" as you take turns in attacking. This system is now starting to go out of fashion, as it can get quite boring, but Square-Enix is now trying to make battles more real-time and as realistic as possible. There are summons and magical attacks in the game that rely on "materia". There are also many weapons in the game and throughout events in the story you can collect stronger ones for your character. Each character features a unique special attack. When a character takes alot of damage, a gauge begins to fill up, when this is at its maximum, the character can unleash a deadly attack - this is a nice feature of the game. (As you level up, you learn stronger abilites) The music of Final Fantasy 7 was composed by a very reknowned and acknowledged composter, Nobuo Uematsu. Although the FF7 game was popular, this lead to the official soundtrack recording great sales worldwide with popular titles such as 'One Winged Angel. Although today we might look back on this great game and compare its graphics, gameplay and music to games such as Final Fantasy 10, there is really no comparison. At its time, 7 years ago, this game was the tip of the iceberg for supreme gaming entertainment and will forever remain as one of the most popular games of all time. |
