A BRIEF HISTORY
If one thinks of history
as the story of man', then the history of this island is one of the
richest episodes in that story. Crete holds a special place in our history
we call it 'the cradle of European civilisation'. Even the most jaded of
tourists must agree after a visit to Knossos (near Heraklion) -whose
history began well over 3000 years ago -that it must be one of the few
archaeological sites in the world where the power and vitality of a long-gone
era is so palpably present.
